Chapter 0: Prologue

There’s a concept called an “essential character.”

In collection-type games, often called gacha games, it’s a character that is “absolutely” recommended to obtain. You don’t necessarily need them to progress, but if you have them, the difficulty

drops dramatically.

In short, it’s a character you’re “screwed” without.

That’s an essential character.

In the game I play, 『Legend of Academia』, or “LeoA” for short, the essential character refers to only one character.

A non-attribute 4-star character, Lee Sihyuk.

When he was first released, no one bothered to raise him, and he was considered trash-tier in terms of performance. However, after one user discovered his potential, he’s never fallen from the

top tier as a support character.

Furthermore, due to the nature of collection games where male characters are often looked down upon, there was a lot of ridicule directed towards the users who raised him at first.

‘How can a character’s name be Lee Sihyuk’

‘Are there any gays raising Lee Sihyuk?’

But that mockery gradually turned into praise in the face of his overwhelming performance.

‘Honestly, don’t you guys admit Sihyuk-hyung is legit?’

‘Isn’t Sihyuk-hyung on par with a beautiful girl? His performance is like that of a beautiful girl, right?’

And now, three years after LeoA’s launch, he’s become a religion.

Due to the power inflation of collection games, characters released early on gradually fell behind in relative performance, but Lee Sihyuk was an exception.

Rather, the better characters that came out, the more Lee Sihyuk, the non-attribute support, rose in value.

New users were strongly recommended to get Lee Sihyuk and start the game. All guides were written with the assumption that you have Lee Sihyuk, and the same went for new content and

balance patches.

Therefore, users who didn’t have Lee Sihyuk became the subject of ridicule.

Chloe of Space. Miyuki of Flash. Alpha Queen Clodel. Kwon SoSo of Authority. It doesn’t matter much if you don’t have these powerful 5-star characters.

Because 5-star characters have periodic pick-up events, and you can get them guaranteed after 200 pulls at the pity system.

But Lee Sihyuk is a 4-star character. He appears at a much higher rate than a 5-star, but it’s not guaranteed.

For users with really bad luck, there’s a chance they might not even meet Lee Sihyuk.

And that was me.
