Chapter 14: Medium (modified)
It took a moment to process the situation. Why was I bound, and where the hell was I?
I glanced around. It was dark. And empty.
Relief washed over meâI wasnât dead. Honestly, I thought theyâd kill me the moment I passed out, but for some reason, they kept me alive and chained.
No, scratch that. I thought I was done for when I took that last Genesis hit. Even I didnât think Iâd survive. How was I still breathing?
âPhewâŚâ
The Black Mage. I never expected to meet him so soon. Iâd hoped to stay off his radar, but it looks like Iâm firmly on it now.
ââŚâ
For now, I pushed thoughts of the Black Mage aside.
I checked my condition. Fortunately, I was in decent shape.
Not because they healed me. My passive skill, Self Recovery, was slowly patching me up bit by bit.
Clank, clankâ!
âUghâŚ! Grrâ!â
I strained against the shackles with all my might.
Butâ
âGrrrâŚ!â
What theâŚ!
For some reason, my strength wasnât responding.
Clank, clankâ!
âUgh⌠damn⌠itâŚ!â
Activating buffs made the chains rattle, but they didnât break. These werenât just sturdyâthey were unnaturally tough. My strength felt like half its usual power.
âŚOf course. Theyâre not idiots. They wouldnât just chain me up without slapping on some debuffs.
Damn it, I was so close to breaking themâŚ
These werenât the same kind binding Tana. If they were, they wouldnât be this loose. Still, breaking them would take time.
My heart raced. I didnât have time to waste. Tana and Shai were in danger. Worst case, Shai might already be dead.
Will of the Warrior could clear these debuffs, but using it now would leave me defenseless against Akairumâs petrification. My weapon was gone, and I had no All-Cure Potions. Will of the Warrior had a one-day cooldown. I didnât know Akairumâs petrification cooldown, but since my Will was likely reset, his petrification probably was too. Or maybe it had no cooldown at all.
Creakâ
A door opened ahead, and someone entered.
ââŚAkairum?â
It was him, accompanied by soldiers.
âWell, well, awake already.â
ââŚâ
Akairum smirked vilely.
âYou look good in chains. Suits you. Heh heh.â
ââŚWhat happened to Tana? And Shai?â
âOh, worrying about others in your state? Shouldnât you focus on yourself? Lifeâs precious to everyone, you know.â
âShut up and answer. Is Shai dead?â
âShai⌠hmâŚâ
His expression flickered oddly for a moment.
ââŚYes, no reason to keep him alive, so we killed him. Heh heh.â
He sneered, but I caught that brief shift in his face.
This bastard slipped up.
Shai was likely alive, probably escaping through a secret passage like in the original story.
That meant I didnât need to worry about him. The issue now was Tana.
âAnd Tana?â
âOh, you donât care that Shaiâs dead?â
âShould I cry for you?â
âHaha, a guy who doesnât get swayed by emotions. I like people like you⌠utterly useless emotions.â
âAkairum. What happened to Tana?â
âHm⌠what do you think happened?â
He chuckled and threw the question back.
âAlive? Dead? Who knows, maybe the ritual succeeded, and sheâs gone. Heh heh.â
Fcking bastard.
I wanted to gouge out those snake eyes, but with my limbs bound, I was helpless.
For now, I had to play along. Without special measures, Tanaâs ritual couldnât even start, let alone succeed.
âŚAnd then.
Clank, clankâ
I subtly tugged at the chains, careful not to draw attention.
Just a bit more time, and I could break free.
âYou know the ritual hasnât even started. All talk, no skillâŚâ
ââŚWatch your mouth. Seems youâve forgotten your place.â
âMy place? If you wanted me dead, youâd have done it already. You kept me alive for a reason, didnât you?â
ââŚTrue. A pity, though. I wanted to see you squirm.â
âŚFcking creep. What a twisted guy.
âLetâs get to the point. I have questions for you.â
ââŚQuestions?â
âWhere did you come from? Someone like you doesnât just pop up in Critias.â
âNo obligation to tell you.â
âHm⌠fine, thatâs not important. Then, where did you get that power?â
He pointed his wand at me, continuing.
âAnswer. This is why weâve kept you alive.â
ââŚIs that so?â
âDepending on your answer, I might let you live. Maybe even get you into His Majestyâs royal guard. Howâs that?â
ââŚâ
âTempting, isnât itââ
ââŚPfftââ
I couldnât hold back a laugh. Royal guard? Screw that.
âPuhahaha!â
For a guy with a silver tongue, his lies were pathetic. Whoâd fall for that arrogant tone?
I mocked him openly.
âIdiot. You think anyone but a child would buy that? Your toneâs all wrong.â
ââŚâ
âWant to know? Get on your knees and beg. Maybe Iâll tell youâŚâ
Boomâ!
âGuhâŚ!â
Without warning, Akairum fired an energy bolt. It slammed into my stomach.
ââŚSo, you wonât talk.â
Breathing heavily, as if suppressing rage, he spoke.
ââŚBring him. Weâre starting the ritual.â
He turned, muttering low.
âŚRitual?
âRitual? âŚTana?â
âYes. Youâre essential for it. Youâre the key to making the ritual succeed.â
Key.
That word brought Jang to mind.
In the original story, Tanaâs ritual failed at the last moment. It got that far because of Jangâs death.
Witnessing his death caused Tana a moment of shock and resignation, creating a gap in her will that suppressed her resistance, allowing the ritual to proceed.
And now, Iâm the key?
âŚAm I Jang now?
